This page is still under construction. If you think there is a question that should be here then just email us using our 'Contact Us' form.

Q. Is it legal to educate your children at home?

A.  Yes it is perfectly legal, the law states that your child must recieve an education, it is the parents decision how that education is implemented.

Q. But surely children have to go to school?

A. Please read our page 'Home Education - The Law'. You do not have to send your children to school.

Q.What groups are there to help you to deal with any problems you face?

A. There are many organisations and groups(such as this one) around the country that give help and support to Home Educators. The Internet is a good place to start your search. Your local LEA is supposed to have a Home Education liason officer. But experience has shown that the help they can give is restricted by policy. It is best to join an organisation such as 'Education Otherwise' or 'HEAS'. (see our Links page)

Q. I don't have qualifications so how can I be a teacher?

A. You do not have to be a teacher - home education is something that involves the whole family and you can learn with your children. In fact it can be very stimulating to embark on learning projects and a great deal of fun. Education is about learning about life not sitting in a classroom!

Q.How do I follow the National curriculum..etc ?

A. You do not have to follow the National curriculum unless you want to, but many people home educate because they disagree with the curriculum. Again, there are groups and organisations that can give advice based on what YOU want for your child.

Q. Won't my children be deprived socially if they do not go to school?

A. No they wont especially if you can find a group of Home Educators in your area. In fact it is often the case that home educated children have more friends in their peer group because they have many more stimulating and varied interests.

Q.How do I de-register my child from school?

A.Please read our page 'Home Education - The Law'. Also 'Education Otherwise' has a sample letter on their website that you can use as a guide. See www.education-otherwise.org

Q. I am very interested in home educating my children but would like to talk to someone who has already taken that step, can you put me in touch?

A. We do not have the facility to put in contact with any individual BUT if you use our 'Contact Us' form we will give you the details of our groups meetings where you could talk to many home educating families.
